Autumn 2010 ~ The Renovation of the Ballroom

Our five-year tenure at the Seven Stars has seen a dramatic change and overhaul of the old into the new.

The final phase of our transition is the ballroom. After a quick revamp in 2006, we are now ready to completely renovate and refurbish the entire room.

Construction is due to take approximately six weeks. Changes to the room include:

  • Making the ceiling higher, resulting in more natural light pouring through our lengthened windows.
  • Taking out the side booths, creating more space and area to work with.
  • Removing the columns/pillars next to the side booths, resulting in additional space.
  • Re-laying the dance floor.
  • Refurbishing the Ballroom bar.
  • Installing new air-conditioning units; especially for the dancers during those hot summer months!

Tuesday 27th April ~ New wine list launched!

We believe that quality should be the driving force in
selecting all of our products.

Each wine on the list has been selected from hundreds
of wines that have been tasted and tested by our
staff, managers and owners to give you a range that
interests, excites and above all else, tastes really good.

This is a list of wines that we really enjoy and we
hope that you do too!

Monday 1st February ~ Celebrating 5 years at the Royal Seven Stars

On 1st February 2010 we are celebrating our fifth anniversary here at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel. Haven’t the last 5 years flown by!

Many of you will remember the rather drab, old fashioned and neglected surroundings of 5 years ago, which were in dire need of a facelift. With that in mind, the massive refurbishment programme began in earnest back in 2005.

One of the first priorities were the bedrooms, which have been a major success. We now have 21 beautiful bedrooms which we are immensely proud of. The old Carriage Room bar was transformed into a chic café bar and renamed Bar 7. The Saloon bar was brightened up whilst maintaining the feel of a traditional pub.

The hotel was also treated to a new slate roof and a lovely blue and white paint job, plus custom-made umbrellas which completed the new alfresco front terrace – one of the best people-watching spots in town!

The newest, and arguably most impressive, addition to the hotel has been the conversion of the old garages into a stylish Restaurant, the TQ9 brasserie located at the side of the hotel.

We’re sure that our regular customers will join us in celebrating the successes of the last 5 years as we reflect on the amazing transformation we have achieved!

Looking forward, our next big project in Autumn 2010 is to be a total refurbishment of the Ballroom, with the aim of transforming it into one of the most stylish wedding, function and conference venues in the area.

In the meantime, we have lots of exciting events and special offers lined up for 2010 in addition to our already busy weekly schedule. For the latest news and information, visit our events page

Tuesday 8th December ~ Totnes Christmas Festival

The first Totnes Christmas Festival night of 2009 happened tonight, and was a great success for all concerned, despite the damp conditions!

Here at the Royal Seven Stars we were very lucky to have the legendary Plymouth-based Celtic folk rock band Mad Dog McRae playing on our front terrace, and there was much dancing in the street!

As always, it was a great atmosphere everywhere and the mulled wine was flowing!

If you missed out, the next Totnes Christmas Festival and late night shopping nights will be on Tuesday 15th December and Tuesday 22nd December.

For more information, visit Born Hectic Events

Monday 30th November ~ Sponsored Walk

Staff from the Royal Seven Stars and our sister hotel the Royal Castle ventured out today in just our underwear and blond curly wigs!

This wasn't just a normal Monday night out though, it was all in aid of the Meningitis Trust in memory of David Hawke, the general manager of the Royal Castle who sadly passed away earlier this year.

We were very lucky to have beautiful (but freezing!) weather for our great, scenic walk from Dartmouth to Totnes.

Sponsorship is still being collected but we are confident that we will come to an impressive total!

Thursday 16th July ~ The Bar 7 Michael Jackson Tribute

This Thursday in Bar 7 we held our very own Totnes tribute to Michael Jackson!

We had a special guest DJ who played nothing but Michael Jackson hits all night, which got virtually everyone up boogying!

Gareth came up with two cocktail specials, named Smooth Criminal and Sloe Comfortable Thriller!

It was a great night and a great atmosphere in Bar 7, with most people observing the black and white dresscode, as you can see from the rest of the photos by joining our facebook group!

The next summer event will be the Bar 7 Beach Party on Thursday 13th August; don't miss it!

Friday 8th May ~ The arrival of Cornish Orchards Cider

This week we were very excited to take our first delivery of our brand new cider from Cornish Orchards!

It comes from a small Cornish producer who have only just started to sell their ciders to the on trade through Sharps Brewery of Rock.

We are very lucky in that the Royal Seven Stars and Royal Castle are the only places in Devon where you can buy this delicious cider on draught!

We'll be celebrating the arrival of our new favousite pint with a Cider Party in Bar 7 on Thursday 21st May, where you can enjoy free tasters, Cornish pasties, live music with Lauren Crystal and apple bobbing!

Or just pop in and try it! £3.50 per pint, £1.80 per half.

Sunday 29th March 2009 ~ The Royal Seven Stars  Wedding Fair

The first annual Wedding Fair was held on Sunday 29th March throughout the Royal Seven Stars, in partnership with sister hotel The Royal Castle in Dartmouth.

The hotel looked fantastic, with wedding cars outside in the sunshine provided by Perrings of Totnes and Exec Travel, flowers, banners balloons and bunting, and a fabulously dressed grand staircase by Fleurette of Totnes.

Entertainment was provided in the Ballroom by Art Deco Music, who perform mellow hits from the 20s, 30s and 40s. Background music was also supplied in between by Devon DJ. There were gorgeous cakes (with free tasters!) from Claires Cakes, favours by Sweet Memory Lane, great balloon arrangements by Balloons R Us, photography by Keith Male, beauty advice and makeovers by FAB and Teresa Knight, handcrafted fascinators by Margaret Duffy, as well as information from Marldon Marquees and Uniquity Events.

It was a beautiful spring day, and some browsers enjoyed a relaxing drink from the terrace bar and watched the world go by. The bar also proved to be a good place to leave bored grooms and fathers while the ladies talked beauty and accessories!

The Assembly room overlooking the front of the hotel was transformed into a bridal dressing room, with Truly Delightful gowns, Juste Moi Lingerie and Gemme de Joanne jewellery exhibiting.

All the exhibitors and visitors enjoyed the lovely atmosphere and the day proved to be a great success for all involved. The Royal Seven Stars Wedding Fair 2010 is already being planned for Sunday 28th March 2010, for more information just visit our special events page.

Friday 13th March 2009 ~ Red Nose Day

Staff, customers and guests enjoyed a whole day of fun and games at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel in Totnes in aid of Comic Relief.

Staff dressed down in red with some in fancy dress and red noses, a Red Nose egg and spoon race was held and lots of raffle tickets were sold to win fabulous prizes donated by local businesses as well as the Royal Seven Stars. In the evening, Danny Johnson's Johnny Cash tribute provided the entertainment in the Saloon bar and Bar 7 was transformed into a Red Nose cocktail bar, with all profits from the sale of the special Red Nose 'Woo Woo' going to comic relief.

The £400 raised on the day is added to funds already collected from the Red Nose Quiz held in Bar 7 on Wednesday and a caption competition.

Sunday 1st March 2009 ~ The Wedding Show at Powderham Castle

Those of you who attended the Wedding Show at Powderham Castle may have spotted Becca and Kim in the marquee, at the Royal Seven Stars and Royal Castle Hotels stand!

It was a great event with lots of fantastic suppliers, and lovely weather at the Powderham estate.

We are holding our own Wedding Fair on Sunday 29th March in the Ballroom and hope to meet lots more local brides to be there!

Tuesday 3rd February ~ Snow in Totnes!

South Devon has one of the mildest climates in the country, meaning we rarely get snow in the winter.

The last couple of days has seen a lovely couple of inches of snow settle in Totnes town centre, just enough for snowmen!

Wednesday 31st December ~ A Fabulous New Year's Eve Party

Staff, customers and residents alike have now just about recovered from a fantastic New Year's Eve here in Totnes.

We had two live bands, a disco, three bars and a great atmosphere!

We also held an exclusive 5-course dinner in TQ9 Restaurant, with guests able to join in the festivities and return to their table later.

Everyone here at the Royal Seven Stars would like to wish all our customers a Happy New Year!

For details of next year's arrangements for New Year's Eve as soon as everything is confirmed, keep an eye on the special events page.

Saturday 20th December ~ 3 New Bedrooms in time for Christmas!

After several weeks of dust, noise and builders, our 3 new bedrooms are now ready to welcome their first guests!

The rooms have been converted from the old staff accommodation in the west wing, on the Mill Lane side of the hotel.

The rooms consist of one Premier family suite with two bedrooms and two Standard rooms.

We're sure the new rooms will be popular as the decoration is superb, with many original features, and the location may mean they are a little quieter than our front and side facing rooms.

To book one of our new rooms, call Reception

Tuesday 28th October ~ Getting ready for Halloween

We've been carving the pumpkins and dragging the boxes of costumes and decorations out of the loft in preparation for TWO halloween parties!

We'll be celebrating halloween in Bar 7 in Thursday 30th October with live music by the talented Steve Flanders.

On the day itself, Friday 31st October, Jeff Palfrey will be entertaining the spooky Saloon bar!

Saturday 13th September ~ Maria and Matt's Wedding

We were lucky enough to host the wedding of Maria Thomas and Matt Herbert on 13th September! Maria has worked for us for some time in Bar 7 and will be known to many of our regular guests.

A great day was had by all, whether they were among the guests or those who worked all day to make sure everything was just right!

Congratulations, Maria and Matt!

Thursday 14th August ~ Bar 7 Beach Party

The Bar 7 Beach Party saw 30kg of sand being spread over the floor of Bar 7, a myriad of decorations strewn around the room and all the staff in fancy dress!

To see the good, the bad and the ugly , join our Facebook group!

We have live music every Thursday in Bar 7, and our next big event is planned for Thursday 25th September when we will be holding the Bar 7 Back To School Party!

Thursday 31st July ~ Totnes and District Agricultural Show

A damp but enjoyable day was had today at the 90th Totnes and District Agricultural Show, held at Berry Pomeroy, just 2 miles from the Royal Seven Stars.

The Royal Seven Stars and Royal Castle Hotels worked together to feed hundreds of hungry judges whilst also providing public catering and the famous beer tent!

There was a tempting range of snacks available, including local burgers, McCabe's bacon baps, freshly made sandwiches and strawberries with Devon clotted cream.

Located just behind the main ring, we all had a great view of the livestock, horses and all sorts of displays and activities.
